The competition is not only entertaining and interesting from a musicological point of view. Peace researcher Maximilian Lakitsch believes that the ESC is highly relevant to the topic of peace in many respects. The event is dedicated to the common and unifying musical gatheringThe competition is often less important than the quite self-ironic and shrill performances. Europe presents itself as tolerant and progressive.

The ESC can, and of course should, be critically scrutinised. "Who belongs to Europe and who doesn't and why? What political and social reprisals are hidden beneath the show, such as in Azerbaijan or Israel? And what does the exclusion of a country mean? Does it primarily affect people who don't think much of the national regime anyway?" So the Eurovision Song Contest is actually an apolitical event, but one that has enormous political relevance.
Mr Lakitsch is right.
